Associate Professor

Dr Maria Papagianni is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition in Child and Adolescent at the University of Thessaly. She graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Hospital of Infectious Diseases (Pediatric Department) of Thessaloniki and at the Hippokration General Hospital (3rd Department of Pediatrics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) of Thessaloniki, Greece. She further specialized in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Hippokration General Hospital of Thessaloniki, as well as at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Institute of Child Health, and at the Middlesex Hospital (UCL) in London. She received her PhD with distinction from the Medical School of the University of Thessaly. Subsequently, she was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Education for postdoctoral research lasting 2.5 years (“The role of insulin in the proliferation of airway smooth muscle cells”) at the Laboratory of Physiology of the Medical School of the University of Thessaly. She worked at the Medical School of the University of Thessaly for 7 years under contract (Presidential Decree 407/80) at the rank of Lecturer, with a focus on Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology. She also worked for nearly 20 years in the Unit of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the 3rd Pediatric Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at Hippokration General Hospital of Thessaloniki, initially as a Research Associate, then as an Academic Fellow, and later, after her appointment as Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly, in parallel employment. She is a Scientific Associate of the Endocrinology and Pediatric Diabetes Unit of the 1st Pediatric Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at Hippokration General Hospital of Thessaloniki. Her research is focused on pediatric endocrinology, diabetes mellitus and metabolism, and the role of endocrine disrupting chemicals on reproductive system and obesity. She has authored dozens of scientific publications in international and Greek peer-reviewed journals, as well as presentations at national and international conferences. Her work has received more than 850 citations (h-index: 18) internationally. She also serves as a reviewer for several related peer-reviewed international scientific journals. She actively participated for 27 years in the program “Camp for Children and Adolescents with Diabetes,” organized by the 3rd Pediatric Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with YMCA Thessaloniki, and was responsible for the program for 8 years. Among other scientific societies, she is a member of the Endocrine Society, the European Society of Endocrinology, and the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology. She has served as an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology and as an elected member of the Administrative Committee of the Pediatric Endocrinology Section of the Hellenic Endocrine Society. She is representative of Greece at the General Committee of Diabetes Education Study Group (DESG).
