Svolos Vaios
External Department Instructor Academic Year 2023-2024Dr Vaios Svolos graduated with a BSc in Dietetics and Human Nutrition from Harokopio University of Athens and an MSc in Human Nutrition with specialisation in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Glasgow. He extended his postgraduate studies with a PhD in Human Nutrition followed by a 3-year Post Doctoral Research Associate post at the School of Medicine, University of Glasgow where he is currently affiliated as an Honorary Research Fellow. His past research encompasses questionnaire survey studies, dietary intervention clinical trials, in-vitro and animal model experiments, in collaboration with clinical colleagues from the National Health Service and other academic establishments. During his Post Doctoral post and along with the BINGO research group Dr Svolos secured competitive funding from Core and GutsUK (£50,000) and from the Helmsley Charitable Trust ($1,143,000) to extend his novel PhD trial to a major multicentre UK study assessing the clinical efficacy and mechanism of action of a novel diet therapy in a paediatric and adult patient population. Dr Svolos led the CD-TREAT clinical trial (NCT03171246; NCT02426567). Dr Svolos is also the co-investigator and the Early Career Researcher for a UK multicentre intervention study titled “Unravelling the dietary triggers of Crohn’s disease and their interplay with the microbiome and host”, funded by the Precision Nutrition in IBD Grant of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation ($747,000) (NCT04225689). Dr Svolos is a freelance registered dietitian in Greece. In 2023 he was appointed as a faculty member of the D-ECCO WG (Dietitians Working Group of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation).
