Dr Maria Papagianni is Assistant Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition in Child and Adolescent at the University of Thessaly. She graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1993. She specialized in Pediatrics in the Hospital of Infectious Diseases (Pediatric Department) and in the Hippokrateio Hospital (3rd Department of Pediatrics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) in Thessaloniki, Greece. She trained in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Hippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki and in the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and in the Middlesex Hospital (UCL) in London. She received her PhD on a Doctorate Thesis (Ιnsulin’s action on airway smooth muscle contraction–The role of Epithelium) from the Medical School of the University of Thessaly. She received a scholarship from the Hellenic Ministry of Education for 2.5 years post-doctoral studies (Insulin’s action on airway smooth muscle cell proliferation) in the Laboratory of Physiology in Medical School of the University of Thessaly. She has close collaboration with the Unit of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the 3rd Pediatric Department at the Hippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki. She is the author or co-author of more than 30 ISI scientific publications with an h-factor=12 (10 since 2018) and 475 (264 since 2018) citations in Google Scholar as well as over 35 published abstracts in many international conferences. Her research is focused on pediatric endocrinology and particularly on type 1 diabetes mellitus and pediatric metabolism, endocrine disrupting chemicals and their role on reproductive system and obesity. Since 2014, she is responsible for a diabetes camp program for children and adolescents who suffer from type 1 diabetes mellitus, organized by the Unit of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the 3rd Department of Pediatrics in collaboration with YMCA. She was member of the Governing Committee of the Scientific Section of Pediatric Endocrinology of the Hellenic Society of Endocrinology and of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology. She is reviewer to many peer-review journals including “Metabolism”, “Endocrine” and “Hormones”.
